Several of the world’s top universities are based in the British Midlands, developing world-class research, boasting state-of-the-art facilities and nurturing the best new talent. The research taking place here is world renowned and spans areas as broad as medicine, space science, sports science and technology.

  • The University of Nottingham
    • The University of Nottingham, part of the Russell Group of universities, has been confirmed in the top 1% of more than seven and a half thousand higher education institutions anywhere in the world. Nottingham is placed in the World's Top 30 for Clinical Academic Medicine and Pharmacy. The University is highly ranked for world-class performance in Social Sciences and Agricultural Sciences. It has also been named The Times Higher Education Institution of the Year 2006 in recognition of its pioneering campuses in China and Malaysia and its outstanding performance in international higher education.

      The University of Nottingham nurtures strong relationships with companies based in the region. For example the Engine Research Group, a 20-year collaboration with Ford, is one of the largest university research groups working on spark ignition and diesel engines for the automotive industry. The Institute of Engineering Surveying and Space Geodesy (IESSG), based at the University, is among the fore runners of development of the technology required for the future success of the GNSS and telematics industry.

  • Keele University
    • Well known for its excellent ICT provision, Keele is the UK’s largest integrated campus university and occupies a 617 acre parkland estate. Keele’s Department of Medicines Management is unique within higher education – a distinctive postgraduate academic programme developed in response to the trends in NHS management.
  • The University of Northampton
    • Strong links have been established between the University of Northampton and local NHS trusts, and the university now provides a large majority of the region’s healthcare professionals.
  • Staffordshire University
    • With its reputation for the UK’s largest computing school, Staffordshire University is a plentiful source of IT graduates. It’s also known for it’s diversity – welcoming students from over 70 countries around the world to its campuses in Stoke, Stafford and Lichfield.
  • The University of Leicester
    • Home to the multi-million pound National Space Centre, the University of Leicester is a major research university. Its most famous discovery is DNA genetic fingerprinting and pioneering space exploration, but its strengths stretch across other faculties such as sciences, arts, social sciences, medicine and biological sciences. It harbours a culture of enterprise and innovation and is always exploring new avenues for research collaborations.
  • University of Birmingham
    • Birmingham is another of the prestigious Russell Group of research universities.  Its excellence ranges through faculties as diverse as the groundbreaking Institute of Medical Law to its renowned Business School to the Division of Environmental Health and Risk Management – the UK’s top centre for air pollution research.
  • Loughborough University
    • As the UK’s premier university for sport and sports science, Loughborough has an unparalleled record and some of the best sports facilities in the world. It has also forged long-standing strategic links with multi-national businesses. Loughborough University Business School has a Centre for Automotive Management which trains senior managers from Mercedes, Toyota, Ford and Land Rover.
      Also located here is the University’s Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering - one of the world’s leading centres for automotive research, and the Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology, undertaking research in sustainable energy technologies
  • UCE Birmingham
    • UCE Birmingham has one of the largest faculties of art, design and media education in the UK, through the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design. UCE’s Birmingham Conservatoire is a music college of international stature, which hosts around 375 music events every year.
  • Nottingham Trent University
    • Nottingham Trent University places a strong emphasis on employability, shaping its courses around the knowledge and skills required by today’s employers. Alongside The University of Nottingham, the university also spearheaded the development of BioCity Nottingham, the UK’s largest purpose-built science and innovation centre for the biosciences.
  • Aston University
    • IBM rates Aston University as Europe’s best for quality recruits. MBA’s from its prestigious business school, along with Warwick’s, are ranked as some of the world’s finest. Aston’s Academy of Life Sciences is a world leader in opto-electronic technologies research and is home to the most advanced ophthalmic surgical centre in the UK.
  • The University of Derby
    • Schools and faculties at Derby enjoy links with household names such as Rolls-Royce and Toyota. Facilities include the new £1.5 million Clinical Sills Suite, and the UK’s first dedicated Arts, Design and Technology campus will be completed in 2007.
  • University of Warwick
    • The third Russell Group of Universities located in the region, Warwick, is one of Britain’s leading Universities and business schools.  The University is consistently highly ranked for its quality of teaching and research. The university’s new computer science building has been chosen by IBM as one of the small number of sites dedicated to the development of a new worldwide computer ‘Grid’. Its world-class facilities were hailed as incubator of the year, UK Business Incubation Awards 2004.
  • De Montfort University
    • Leicester’s De Montfort University has a strong focus on the creative industries.
      The university has made the strategic decision to align many of its research activities with the economic, social and cultural aims of the region, and its courses are recognised not only for their academic quality, but also for their relevance to the workplace. Part of the University is the Earth and Planetary Remote Sensing Laboratory, which focuses on the analysis and interpretation of remote sensing data, with an emphasis on radar instruments.
  • Coventry University
    • Coventry University is a forward thinking; modern university that has fostered close links with world renowned companies such as Jaguar, BT, Ford and Nokia.  This enables students to relate what they are learning to real world experience by taking advantage of work placements. It’s faculties of business environment and society; engineering and computing, and health and life sciences have earned it the reputation as a university that ‘isn’t afraid to innovate’.
  • The University of Lincoln
    • Lincoln’s university has quickly become an integral part of the city’s economy and landscape, and its state-of-the-art Brayford Pool campus was the first university campus to be built in a city centre in 25 years. The university runs a number of successful Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) schemes, as well as a highly successful graduate business incubation centre.
  • University of Wolverhampton
    • A true 21st century University, Wolverhampton’s students benefit from multi-million pound facilities, a diverse selection of over 340 courses and a dynamic metropolitan environment in which to study.
  • Open University
    • The Open University in the West Midlands has 60 staff and 600 part-time tutors supporting 12,000 students. The OU provides flexible support, tailored to the needs of the individual student and their area of study.
  • Newman College
    • The UK’s top ranked higher education college, Newman is committed to providing excellent student support and welcoming new students into a friendly community. Newman also prides itself on the relevance of its qualifications – with all full-time degrees having a work placement module.
  • Birmingham College of Food
    • Birmingham College of Food, Tourism and Creative Studies is an international renowned specialist institution. Over 6,500 students thrive on its flexible modes of study and unmatched facilities – including training restaurants, hair and beauty therapy salons, food and beverage test laboratories and a video production suite.
  • University College Worcester
    • Worcester is a champion of lifelong learning – many of its students are mature students returning back to gain professional and post-graduate qualifications. The university has strong links with organisations in the business, creative, education and health communities in Herefordshire and Worcestershire to help its students achieve more.
  • Harper Adams University College
    • Offering the best of both worlds, Harper Adams University College combines a rural Shropshire setting with state-of-the-art teaching facilities, laboratories and the £3 million Bamford Library. Harper Adams has fostered excellent links with agricultural, food and rural industries to give its graduates the edge when it comes to employment in these sectors
