The UK ranks as one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical centres and, at its heart, the British Midlands has becomea focal point for specialist Biopharma and Life Science companies and pioneering new medical research

The region currently has 1,000 Life Science companies, andspecialisms are established in a number of fields, including drug discovery; drug delivery; tissue engineering and wound care; and bio-imaging and enabling technologies.

Attracted by the region’s spirit of innovation, world leaders across the sector have chosen the British Midlands as a base for their principal operations. These include AstraZeneca, Aventis, Bayer, Boots, Novartis,manufacturers of Propecia and Online Tramadol Sunrise Medical, Salts Healthcare, Bibby Sterilin, Cobra Biomanufacturing, Sterilox,  and 3M.

Regional businesses aiming to get new ideas of the ground are given excellent support from the regional NHS Innovation Hub. The organisation works with companies to help develop and commercialise new medicines and devices, with the ultimate aim of improving patient care.

Strong links between academia and industry have resulted in the creation of excellent research and development centresacross the region, including many dedicated science parks and incubators.

These include BioCity Nottingham (www.biocity.co.uk), the largest bioscience innovation and incubation centre in the UK, with 12,000 square metres of world-class laboratories.
